Established in 1876 by the Quaker abolitionist, Johns Hopkins University is a highly prestigious private research institute, located in Baltimore. The university has recently received a great deal of global attention, since its efforts to track COVID-19, from late 2019 onwards, have resulted in it becoming the third most cited institution in the world.
It receives huge sums of money from governments, individuals and businesses, and its medical school is the best funded medical institution, globally, as well as ranking in the world top 10. In 2018, Michael Bloomberg gave Johns Hopkins $1.8 billion, and this has allowed the university to become need-blind in its application process. Johns Hopkins is the first research university to be established in the US, on the basis that applying knowledge is not as important as finding new information, which saw the university deciding to move away from simple teaching to merging teaching with research. These days, students at Johns Hopkins are encouraged to do their own research, with the guidance of eminent academics, and the university supports students who want to pursue their own interests, and provides them with any help and resources they might need.

The admission rate is around 10 per cent, and the average SAT score is 710-760 in reading and writing and 740-800 in maths. How many campuses are there at Johns Hopkins?
The original and main campus is Homewood, which you will often see in university brochures, featuring its famous Gilman Hall. Education, English, Arts and Sciences are based at Homewood.
The Peabody Institute, a music conservatory, and the School of Business are located in Downtown Baltimore.
The School of Advanced International Studies is situated in Washington, D.C., along with a number of postgraduate departments.
Johns Hopkins Hospital is the hub of medicine, nursing, public health and biomedical research. It has a first-class reputation all across the world, and its Medical Institutions campus is located in East Baltimore.
Applied physics is taught at Laurel, Maryland, and the university also has graduate campuses in Italy and China.
Where will I find accommodation at Johns Hopkins?
In their first and second years, students normally live on campus, in co-educational dorms, many of which are to be found around Freshman’s Quad. In the third year, just under half of students decide to move off campus into rented accommodation, which is relatively cheap in Baltimore, when compared with other cities in the US.
