Overview

Queen Mary was created by the amalgamation of St Bart’s Hospital Medical College, the London Hospital Medical College, Westfield College and Queen Mary College. The new institution became part of the University of London in 1915. A public, research university, ranked 125th globally by QS (2023), Queen Mary has over 25,000 students, 40 per cent of whom are international. Its history and origins  have significantly shaped its success. Bart’s Hospital had treated patients since the 12th century, and the London Hospital began training doctors in 1785, and as a result medicine is a major focus of research. Queen Mary University  is ranked third, globally, for its medical research citations, and its Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry is in the global Top 10.

The Queen Mary campus

One of the attractions of studying at Queen Mary is its location, in London’s East End. This trendy area  is home to pop-up restaurants and bars, clubs and the glorious foods of Brick Lane. In addition it is only a stone’s throw away from the City, the Olympic Park and Canary Wharf.

Queen Mary University has six campuses.

The Mile End Campus

Mile End is the main campus and is situated on the Regent’s canal, a few minutes’ walk from the underground station of the same name. The faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as Science and Engineering, are located here. There are 2500 student rooms available on site, as well as shops, a nightclub, cafes, restaurants, bars, gym facilities, a bank and a bookshop. The student health services are found at Mile End campus, as is the Harold Pinter Drama Studio and the Queen’s Building with its eye-catching Octagon library. The People’s Palace at Mile End can accommodate 1700 students at a time, and includes three lecture theatres. This campus is the main hub of Queen Mary and students from every site are free to use its many facilities.

Queen Mary: secondary campuses

The Whitechapel campus is located  a mere three miles from the centre of London, a leading global city with its own dynamic vibe and multicultural riches. Ten minutes’ walk away from Mile End, the Whitechapel campus houses dentistry and medicine students, and is home to the Faculty of Dentistry and Medicine. Although students can use all the facilities at Mile End, the Whitechapel campus also contains its own café and bar, as well as many lab facilities. The world-famous Blizard Institute, which focusses on immunobiology, child health and genomics, is found on this campus, as is the Royal London Hospital.

Postgraduate law students have a campus in the heart of legal London, at Lincoln’s Inn Fields, in Holborn. This is one stop on the underground from Tottenham Court Road and the beginning of Oxford Street – shoppers’ paradise. Lincoln’s Inn Fields contains the UK’s  leading law chambers and has been the heartland of legal practise for centuries. You will see barristers hurrying to court in their wigs and gowns and solicitors’ clerks dashing across the street, their arms full of bundles of legal documents.

Accommodation at Charterhouse Square is reserved for students of dentistry and medicine. This central  London campus houses the Bart’s Cancer Institute ,William Harvey Research Institute  and the Wolfson Institute of Population Health.

Queen Mary’s West Smithfield campus is home to St Bartholomew’s Hospital, the Heart Centre and the West Smithfield Library. It provides students of medicine and dentistry with on-site accommodation. The campus houses a number of public health research centres into cancer, cardiovascular disease and epidemiology.

Queen Mary opened the satellite Ilford campus for teaching medicine in May 2023. Students will practise on mocked-up hospital wards and gain practical experience of applying medical principles.

Queen Mary- accommodation options

Queen Mary guarantees that all new undergraduate, postgraduate and foundation students will be offered accommodation, either in its halls of residence or through one of its partner providers.

The Queen Mary Mile End campus has 2,500 rooms, which are either ensuite or shared, and have a communal kitchen for 3-11 students. The kitchens are well-equipped and have fridge-freezers, microwaves, cookers, kettle etc. and an eating area.

NB: Bedrooms at Mile End have either a small double or a single bed, desk and chair, storage space, bookshelves and a wardrobe. Nonetheless, you will have to supply your own bedlinen, crockery and cooking utensils. Wi-Fi is, however, included in the rent, there are laundry facilities nearby or on the premises, and heating and utility bills are normally included.

Queen Mary offers single sex options, security patrols and communal area cleaning. Many halls also have communal gardens.

Queen Mary caters for students with disabilities – with certain halls introducing strobe fire alarms and aids for the hearing impaired. The facilities depend on the hall. If you are a wheelchair user, you need to check the availability of lifts and ground floor rooms.

Queen Mary’s Housing Services team will help and guide you to find the right accommodation for your needs. Once you have settled in, the Residential Services team is there to provide support, a Welcome Programme and activities. In addition, the team deals with maintenance issues , welfare and health. It can also refer you to the right academic or physical and mental health services.

Queen Mary’s campuses at Charterhouse Square and Whitechapel are specifically designed to allow students of dentistry and medicine to live close to the university clinical facilities. As a result, students are able to share with others working towards the same degrees.

All applications for accommodation have to be made through the Queen Mary housing portal, which opens in March each year. You will have to go online, using the password and username you were given when you first applied to Queen Mary. You must firmly accept your offer of a place before filling in your forms for accommodation. Applications have to be submitted by the deadline – 30 June.

Queen Mary’s housing services will send you  confirmation of your place in halls between July and September. You should respond promptly, and accept your room allocation before it lapses.

Queen Mary accommodation: costs

Queen Mary’s halls of residence charge different rates. As a result, it is difficult to provide more than a rough guide, since prices depend on the type of room you choose. The range of accommodation spans the basic room with shared facilities, to the deluxe ensuite, and room sizes also vary.

As a rough rule of thumb, a twin room with a shared kitchen and bathroom costs approximately £124.95 per person per week, while a single studio costs £194-£250 per week. Charges include water, energy, Wi-Fi, cleaning and insurance for personal possessions. Extra-large single rooms cost around £20 more per week than standard singles, in a shared flat with 3-6 students.

Make sure that you check the length of the rental contract when you are choosing where to live, since these vary from 37-51 weeks.
