Sheffield University is a highly-respected public research university situated on the edge of England’s glorious Peak District. It was voted Number 1 in the UK, and 11th in Europe, for overall student experience, social life and accommodation in the Times Higher Education survey. Sheffield itself is the fourth largest city in Britain but has the atmosphere of a friendly town. It is an extremely green city, and the only one which has a national park within its boundaries. Students praise its strong faculty, outstanding resources and commitment to study, while The Times calls Sheffield “the powerhouse of British Higher Education”. How difficult is it to get a place at Sheffield?
Sheffield University has a student population of approximately 30,000 – 10,000 of whom are postgraduates. Twenty-four per cent of the student body are international and five per cent come from the EU. Although entry requirements are high, as is always the case with Russell Group universities, Sheffield accepts 85.6 per cent of applicants. Undergraduates who have not attended English-speaking schools need to demonstrate that their English proficiency is good, and should score 6 in IELTS, overall, and a minimum of 5.5 in each section. Postgraduates are expected to have an IELTS overall score of 6.5, with no less than 6 in each section of the exam. Sheffield is particularly highly-respected for its postgraduate courses and is one the UK’s top ten institutions of higher education for research funding, as well as being No.1 for engineering research investment. Globally, it is in the top five universities for biological research and its department of architecture is singled out for excellence, as is the management school, which has triple accreditation. Ninety per cent of Sheffield’s faculty of engineering research has been rated world-leading. The university has produced studies which led to the award of six Nobel prizes, for the therapeutic effects of penicillin; George Porter, the head of chemistry’s work on photolysis; and the citric acid cycle. discovered by Hans Krebs and his biochemistry students . This is a far cry from the early days of Sheffield University, when it ran courses in cow-keeping, mining and razor grinding, and railway economics!

Will I enjoy student life in Sheffield?
Sheffield is a welcoming, green and lively city, with an underground art, music and culture scene to rival Newcastle and Manchester. The cost of living is lower here than in southern England, and if you have spare time, you can join one of the university’s 300 societies and 50 sports clubs. Sheffield University has its own newspaper, radio station and TV station and a universally acknowledged brilliant student union, which runs an extensive calendar of events. The nightlife is second to none and, since the total student population of Sheffield numbers over 60,000, the city caters to its young residents with a vast network of cafes, restaurants and bars.
