Best Universities in Europe: it’s not just the UK!
The best universities in Europe form the 40% of the top world institutes. During the last ten years, the number of courses taught in English has spiralled, multiplying 50-fold – a trend which shows no sign of fading away, particularly in view of the projected rise in UK tuition fees, post-Brexit.
What happens next?
There is still a lack of certainty about what will happen in Britain once the transition period for leaving the EU ends in December 2020. No one knows as yet whether universities will offer more scholarships to compensate for the withdrawal of student loans for EU applicants, or whether EU students will have to pay the same fees as international students. Or even if some compromise solution will be found. Given this uncertain situation, it is not surprising that young people are considering applying to other countries in Europe where they can get a prestigious degree without worrying about cost.
Where can I study in English in Europe?
The short answer is virtually anywhere! Before you get too excited, it is important to point out that many of the courses taught in English are aimed at postgraduates, and there are fewer bachelor’s degree courses available. Nevertheless, if you are looking for an undergraduate course, it is worth making the effort to find your dream degree, since you will either pay no fees or a minimal contribution, as an EU applicant.
Best Universities in Europe
Fall in love with these countries:
For example, studying in Germany, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden and Finland is totally free, while the Netherlands charges an annual tuition fee of around 2000 euros, depending on the subject, and Norway asks for a $70 dollar a term contribution towards its student welfare fund. If you want to study in Belgium, you have to budget for annual tuition fees of around 950 euros, which is quite affordable.
Why not Russia?
Some of you may even be interested in applying to Russia, which is theoretically a European country. Russian universities currently run a broad range of undergraduate programs, including medicine, aviation, geology and engineering – fields in which they excel. The Russian government is funding 15,000 places for international students, and their contribution not only covers tuition and accommodation (in a dormitory) but also provides you with $25 a month for spending!
